Historic Farmhouse Roof Restoration with Rust Treatment and Cool Roof Technology
Location:Â KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Project: 70-Year-Old Farmhouse Roof – Rust Treatment, Leak Prevention, and Modern Protective Coating
Issue: A heritage farmhouse, with its original roofing sheets still intact after 70 years, was suffering from extensive rust and multiple leak points. The roof’s aged structure was no longer offering reliable protection, threatening the property’s integrity and requiring urgent, sensitive restoration.
Overview:
Target Roofing & Waterproofing was engaged to restore the original metal roofing of a historic farmhouse. The objective was to halt ongoing water damage, treat severe rust buildup, and extend the life of the roof without replacing its character-defining original materials.
Problem Diagnosis
Inspections identified widespread corrosion, particularly around lap and cross joints. Many roof screws had degraded, allowing water to penetrate during heavy rainfall. While the roof’s structure was still intact, its weatherproofing had long since failed.
Solution Implementation:
A comprehensive rust treatment was applied to stabilize the metal roof surface. All screw points were waterproofed, and lap and cross joints were sealed with advanced membrane solutions to restore integrity. Once repairs were completed, the entire roof was coated using Plascon Cool Roof Technology—a high-performance coating designed to reflect heat, reduce interior temperatures, and provide long-lasting weather protection.
Outcome:
The restored farmhouse roof now stands fully leak-free, having been tested by recent rains with no water ingress. The application of cool roof paint not only improves aesthetics but also delivers energy efficiency and UV protection, extending the life of this heritage roof.
This project showcases Target Roofing & Waterproofing’s ability to preserve historical character while delivering modern, high-performance roofing solutions. With careful attention to detail and proven restoration techniques, we ensured this farmhouse continues to stand strong—protected, efficient, and ready for the future.
